My name is Shalina, I’m from the San Francisco Bay Area in California, and I graduated from Scripps College in May 2015 with a degree in Linguistics & Cognitive Science. For the next 9 months I will be living in Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi, Indonesia, as an English teaching assistant under a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant.

FAQ:

Do you speak Bahasa Indonesia?
I’m currently trying to teach myself bahasa with some help, and hopefully I’ll get to practice it a lot in Indonesia!

How long will you be in Indonesia?
August 2015 to May 2016. That is not including any travel I might do after my grant ends.

Have you ever been to Indonesia before?
I’ve been to Bali before on a family vacation when I was very young, but other than that, no. However, I’ve spent a month in Malaysia a couple years ago so I am not entirely new to that part of the world.

Have you taught English before?
No! So this is going to be an exciting new experience for me (in so so so many ways). I’ve taught other subjects before, but in general this is very much out of my wheelhouse.

Are you excited?
Yes!

Are you nervous?
Yes!

And the rest, I suppose I’ll get to in my blog! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me through the comments.
